Decision and vignette-design lab

A 45-minute class using delay discounting and randomized vignettes to teach choice design, random assignment, manipulation checks, and outcome ratings.

Preparation

Complete these checks before sharing participant links.

  • Review the amounts and delays used in the choice task.
  • Use neutral, low-risk vignette content for the class exercise.
  • Confirm the manipulation-check item matches the assigned condition.

Class flow

The complete plan uses 45 minutes.

  • 7 min · Design: Identify choice attributes, conditions, and outcome variables.
  • 13 min · Run tasks: Complete both templates and record the assigned vignette condition.
  • 10 min · Check assignment: Count condition assignment and review the manipulation check.
  • 10 min · Compare outcomes: Summarize choices and ratings with the stated analysis unit.
  • 5 min · Debrief: List design limits and claims the data cannot support.

Data and analysis

Core fields: immediate_amount, delayed_amount, delay_days, choice, condition, vignette_id, scale_value, manipulation_check, rt.

  • How does the share of delayed choices change with delay length?
  • Were vignette conditions assigned at similar rates?
  • Did the manipulation check separate conditions before the outcome comparison?
